POST-INSERTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORAL APPLIANCE
Adjustment Period
A new appliance will feel cumbersome at first. It is not uncommon to have
- increased salivation
- minor gagging
- difficulty swallowing
- minor tooth discomfort
If any of these symptoms persist schedule an appointment for an evaluation.
Exercises for jaw repositioning
After sleeping with a mandibular advancement appliance all night it is not uncommon for the teeth to not be able to touch normally upon awakening. It is important to get the jaws back in proper relationship by performing these exercises:
- Bite your teeth together for 3-4 seconds and release. Repeat every 20 seconds until the teeth come together comfortably again.
- Lean your chin on your hand and press down assuming the pose of Rodin's "The Thinker". Apply enough pressure to press the back teeth together.
Caring for your appliance
- clean every morning
- store away from small children and animals
- do not leave in a hot car
- do not place in checked in luggage when flying
